To do in Kiruna


When thinking of what to do in Kiruna one mostly thinks about outdoor activities. The wilderness surrounding Kiruna is amazing. Here the fantastic Icehotel is situated and nearby one can find Kebnekaise, the highest mountain in Sweden. There are also a lot of nice restaurants and bars in Kiruna. One example of a nice restaurant is “Restaurang Citykrogen”. This restaurant also has a pub with a whiskey-bar. If one wants to try the Lappish food one should dine at “Restaurang Rallaren”. Here one can try many dishes made with the ingredients Elk and Reindeer. There are also many other restaurants in Kiruna.


Outdoors activities

There is a very high and well prepared slalom slope on the hillside of the Loussavaara mountain. Here one can choose between either skiing down the slalom slope or go skiing in the countryside. There are a lot of guided sightseeing tours one can participate in in the surroundings of Kiruna. It is well organized for the tourists and those who wish, can easily find a way to explore the wilderness of the Swedish mountain area. Here one has the possibility to go by helicopter or being pulled by dogs in an open sledge. Here are also a lot of possibilities to participate in lovely walking tours in the mountains.


The railroad-park (Jarnvagsparken)

In the park called “Jarnvagsparken” there are a lot of playgrounds for the children and here also lies a typical Lappish cot that is possible to rent. Associations and groups of people can hire this cot for various meetings. This park was former just a sloop where only the small Swedish mountain birches could grow. Today the park is very lovely and through it flows a small stream.


The path of the midnight sun (Midnattssolstigen)

Outdoors activities are huge tourist attractions in Kiruna. Kiruna can offer the tourists amazing mountains, northern lights and the midnight sun. The midnight sun one can experience from the end of May to the middle of July. Many people visit Kiruna just for the possibility of seeing the midnight sun. In Kiruna one can find a hiking track that is located a bit higher up in the mountains called “the path of the midnight sun”. From up here one can see the midnight sun also later in the summer. When walking this path one achieves information about the environment, the Lappish people and the northern lights from many information boards along the track.
